Sometimes an extra pair of eyes can be quite helpful. |

art must be acquired through experience, but the science is not complex and can be readily transmitted. An understanding of the science then allows the acquisition of the milling art much more quickly and easily. Stevens has found that even millers with many years of experience greatly appreciate a new understanding of the science. It is quite enjoyable to see a miller with 30 years of experience say "Aha, so that's why … ". Stevens discovered during his tenure as an operating miller that sometimes the miller is so close to a problem on a daily basis that he or she just does not recognize it as a problem. Often a fresh set of experienced eyes can see those problems for what they are and also provide relatively simple solutions. When it comes to process improvement, Stevens believes first and foremost in attempting to maximize results based on minimum capital or expense cost. In other words, "Let's first try to work with what we have." Another related strong belief in this area is "If it is not broken, do not try to fix it." Stevens is a believer in entrepreneurship and the power of competitive markets to improve the lot of all. The miller who can produce high quality products efficiently will survive and thrive. |
